Easy Guide to Place Settings

Whether you are planning an informal or formal event, you should know a bit about the anatomy of a place setting. This reminds of when I was in high school, my parents took my sister and I to this fancy restaurant and I was totally overwhelmed. I had no idea what glass to drink out of, or even which one was mine. Now with alot more experience I can enjoy a formal place setting. Here is an easy guide to help you know what to reach for and when.

RULES ON FLATWARE
Start from the outside and work your way in toward the plate as the meal progresses. Usually, the big fork is for the entree; the big spoon for the soup. Any utensils placed horizontally above your plate are for dessert.

WHICH DRINK IS YOURS?
Here's an easy tip to help you remember. Make a circle with your thumb and forefinger. Your left hand will form a "b" and your right hand will form a "d." Bread (b) is on your left; drink (d) is on your right.

ONCE YOUR UTENSILS HAVE BEEN USED
It never goes back on the table. When you're taking a break, rest your fork and knife entirely on the plate. When you are finished, place them diagonally on the plate, side by side, with the handles at 4 o'clock. The knife blade should face the center of the plate, not point out toward another guest (an ancient sign of aggression).

A girl can never have enough shoes, wouldn't you agree? Well with 2010 already here I am already seeing brides taking on this new trend. Colour is huge this year, it will be bold but still elegant. By using a monochromatic color scheme, purple will be big this year as well as blue, but not as intense as royal blue. Oh and I can't forget grey....which I see taking over this season. This can be paired with pink, coral, blue or purple. So why not add a bit of colour to your bridal attire.

Ladies I know how hard it is to find that perfect shoe, but now it might be a bit easier. Seeing one rule for 2010 wedding shoes is...there are no rules! You can choose any shoe you want & love. Remember your wedding should reflect who you are, and what says more them what you wear for your big day. Everything goes with white so you could go with a sexy metallic, bright fruity colour or have you thought of what your "something blue" will be? Why not wear it on your feet. Wearing a colour bridal shoe will add a modern edge to your attire, which I absolutely love.

Well Wedding Show season is in full effect. I remember when I was just engaged and I went to my first Bridal Show in Toronto, I have to say I had no idea what I was walking into. I was completely overwhelmed. There were hundreds of vendors, and some crazy brides. literally, I pasted out after only being there 20minutes. Ha ha my fiance thought I was going crazy, myself trying to get out of the crowd for some air. Now looking back I see what he meant. Anyways I thought I would share a few tips and tricks I have learned over the years and wanted to share. This way you will be prepared for whatever show you will attend big or small.

Have address labels printed up for the event, you can even do these at home. Things to include are; Full Name, Address, Phone Number, Email Address & Wedding Date. You will be filling out so many ballots it just makes it easy to peel & stick all our required information.

Before you attend the show look on the event web site; see what exhibitors will be participating and write down the ones you don't want to miss.

Also if you are curious of an exhibitor that it already participating, book an appointment to ensure one-on-one attention.

Make a plan, write a list of what you need to accomplish and in order of importance. This will allow you to stay calm and focused.

Bring your fiance, friend, mother or even mother-in-law. Someone that you value their opinion from.

Walk threw the show once then return to booths that made an impression.

Take advantage of all the demonstrations, fashion shows, seminars, samples, get your make up & hair done and you can't forget about all the food and cake samples....yum O!

Make notes as you go threw the show, what you liked, didn't like and what inspired you. As well write down the business that stand you. This is another reason to bring a friend, she can do all the writing.

When you come home you will have a bag full of business cards, samples and little gifts. Start by sorting them out, take your note book and find all the business cards of the booths that stood out the most and inspired you. The Internet is your next best friend; search those companies to find out more information. Then all there is to do is to make some phone call to those special exhibitors.

As well remember if you book an appointment at the show they usually take a percentage off your price. There are always deals at these show to be had, but do not conmit to anything that day. It is too overwhelming, just take a few days to get all the information you need.

I hope this helps you out at your next bridal show;stay calm, focused and you will not be one of those overwhelmed brides-to-be, I promise:)

Happy New Years from my family to yours!

Well 2009 has pasted and what a great year that was. I go to meet a lot of wonderful vendors in the Clarington area with the same drive and passion for weddings and events as I do. I want to thank my family and friends as well, I have been working like crazy the last year to grow my business and they supported me every step of the way. So thanks again.

I have to say I am so excited for 2010! Almost Hitched has so much going on I thought I would just share. Well to start off we will be launching our NEW web site mid February so stay tuned for that. Almost Hitched has teamed up with Heather Prosser Photography for our web sites artwork. Heathers work is absolutely stunning and I can’t wait to share some of her work with you.

Doors will open at 12:30PM. We have been waiting a long time to get into this show and I couldn't’t think of a better time for us to showcase who we are and what we do. How Did That Get Started?

All brides love showing off there engagement ring and sharing the every detail of there engagement. Most don't know where it all started from, or why we wear our ring on the 3rd finger. So I thought I would share.

History of the Wedding Ring

Today, the wedding ring symbolizes a promise of never-ending love, devotion, and loyalty. It is the physical representation of the wedding vows. The history of the wedding ring, however, is not quite as romantic. Throughout history, the wedding ring has symbolized various parts of the traditional wedding vows.

For Richer or Poorer
Primitive brides wore rings of rushes or hemp. These were plentiful but not too durable since they had to be replaced frequently. Early Romans wore rings of iron to symbolize the permanence of marriage. As more precious metals became available, rings were made from silver, gold and platinum. Luckily, today’s brides have a wide range of choices as do their grooms. Some people choose alternative rings, such as titanium or tattoos.

Never-Ending Circle

The wedding band's shape represents an unbroken promise of love and commitment. The circle has no beginning and no end; therefore, the marriage has no end. It is believed that many past cultures shared the same beliefs about the circles.
There is, however, another theory behind the ring's shape. Many religions consider marriage as "half of the religion." Some historians say that the wedding ring represents two halves coming together to form a united whole. By completing the circle, primitive man also completed his religion.

From the Heart

Most legends tell us that the Egyptians started the tradition of placing the ring on the 3rd finger of the left hand because they believed that the vein, which ran through that finger runs straight to the heart,it seemed a logical place for the placement of the wedding band. The practice was passed down and the third finger is now universally known as the ring finger. Science has since disproved that theory, but it is still romantic to think that our wedding rings are on a direct path to our hearts. In Medieval Europe, grooms placed the ring on three of the bride’s fingers in turn to symbolize the Trinity – “the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Starting with the index finger, the ring ended up on and remained on the 3rd finger, and that has since become the customary ring finger for all English-speaking cultures. However, in many European countries, the wedding ring is worn on the right hand, and a Greek woman may wear her ring on her left hand while she is engaged but move it to her right hand after her marriage.

Husband's Wedding Ring

Men wearing wedding bands are a fairly recent innovation. Throughout history, men have been dominant and either owned wives or lead harems. There was no need for men to be burdened by symbols of marriage and commitment. Even after modern thinking outlawed all forms of slavery and polygamy, the fingers of men were still unadorned. This was all changed during World War II, which is when it became fashionable for men to wear bands to remind them of the loving wives waiting back home. During the Korean War this number increased. Today, most men wear wedding bands, regardless of military status.

Planning experts suggest that the couple spend time together sharing their dreams for this day. They each may have an idea for a picture perfect day. How are you dressed, where are you, how many people are there? Once you have shared the dream, it is time to translate those ideas into workable details. Developing an idea into a real event can happen when you ask yourself the same questions your English composition teacher asked: who, what, where, when, how?

Who are the people you want most to be included in this day? Jot down their names and total up the numbers for a rough estimate of guests.

Where do you want to get married? Close to home? on an exotic beach? Zero one or two ideas on which you both agree on. Talk about geography, ceremony and reception ideas.

When? Have you always wanted a Christmas wedding or a perfect day in June?

How will you fund it? Will you pay it yourselves? Can you expect help from families.

When you have decided on the basics of your plans and made some major decisions, do yourself a huge favor and make up backup plans for each area- Just in case. It is wise to have alternatives locations, times and dates. And it is just as easy to get information for alternatives while you are checking out your primary choices. Just because you dreamed of your first choice, it may be way too expensive. Or the date already taken.

Beware of what you can and can't have, what are you will to change if necessary, will save you time, energy, sanity throughout the planning process. When you talk with potential vendors, ask
about your alternative plans as well as primary ones. That way, if you need them, you will have more options available.

Well I saw the The Time Traveler's Wife and I love Rachel McAdams on-screen dress. So I had to find it...knowing brides would be looking for this one. It's simple but very elegant, which alot of brides are looking for lately.....the days of long trains are done. Well at least for awhile!

Well here it is, by designer Lea Ann Belter Bridal. Who I have to say is one of my favorite local wedding dress designers. They are just timeless and romantic and you will not regret your choice for your wedding day years to come. This dress is from her 2008 collection "Cecilia" the silk organza ball gown features a strapless sweetheart neckline and a soft A-line shirt with a chapel train. A mocha organza sash flatters the waist and falls softly down the back into tails. The back waist is accentuated with hand tinted blush roses and mocha duchess satin leaves.

The dress is available in off white and white with a variety of sash options ( she has it in mocha). Usually once I dress is featured in film it's nearly impossible to find, but you never know.

Wedding Themed Movies...We all Love Them

I'm a huge fan of Wedding Movies. They get me every time. My husband tells me I have problems, but there is something about them. I actually have a collect just of wedding related movies, pretty much any film with a wedding in it.

Some of my favorites are Bride Wars, 13 going on 30, The Notebook, Runaway Bride, 27 Dresses, Sweet Home Alabama and Momma Mia to name a few.

There are so many out there enjoy.So, brides grab your bridesmaids and have some fun watching some of these hilarious films. You will want to watch them over and over again.I once heard a theory that all good comedies end with a wedding, because comedies provide happiness, and the promise of a new beginning provides the most warmth, or joy, to the human spirit. Not too sure if it is true, but it sure helps in my eyes. Check out some of these films. Maybe you will be inspired like I was.

Four Weddings and a Funeral: Starring Hugh Grant and Andie Macdowell, this is one of the highest grossing British romantic comedies in their history. Four Weddings made Hugh Grant a star overnight. Andie Macdowell stepped into the role just two weeks before filming, after original actress dropped out. Four Weddings is one of Julia Roberts’ favorite movies.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding: Based on the real life experiences of Nia Vardalos, a Greek Winnipeg-based actress, this romantic comedy was originally a one-woman play. Tom Hanks’ wife Rita convinced Hanks to make the movie; he had to convince Vardalos to put more kissing and make out scenes in the movie. It’s definitely one of the funniest, most culturally interested of these top ten wedding movies.

My Best Friend’s Wedding: Another Julia Roberts movie, she costarred with Cameron Diaz and Dermot Mulroney. Roberts is determined to put a stop to her best friend’s wedding (Mulroney is marrying Diaz in the movie). In an interview about this movie, Roberts said a wedding should be “a party to say we all believe in this love.” Director P.J. Hogan said this top ten wedding movie has a Shakespearian feel.

The Wedding Rehearsal

Believe it or not I have many brides who ask us if they really need to have a rehearsal. They just want to show up on their wedding day and trust that all will go well. I remind them that they are about to produce, direct and star in a major production. No Broadway play goes on without rehearsal. The wedding ceremony should not either.

To be sure that everything goes smoothly during the wedding ceremony I believe the rehearsal is necessary. The bride and the groom with their attendants (which include the bride’s
parents or whomever is walking her down the aisle) should take the rehearsal seriously, arriving on time and properly dressed.

Many years ago the bride chose a stand in for the rehearsal, since it was considered unlucky for
her to actually say any of the words of the ceremony before the actual event. Today however,
both the bride and the groom take their places at the altar. It is unlikely that the clergyman will
go through the entire service, but will talk and walk you through the sequence of events. Most
will let the couple go through their responses if they wish. As well as practicing the processional and recessional,and going through the service, the ushers should be briefed on who will sit in the reserved pews and how the other pews should be filled. Other details like who will roll out the aisle cloth and when, who will escort the mothers, and who will decorate the pews in the unlikely event that the florist will not will be covered at rehearsal.

If special music is to be played, a poem to be read or non-traditional vows said, those should be
practiced at the rehearsal so they will be said easily during the ceremony. The groom’s parents may be invited to attend,but since they do not have an active part in the
ceremony they do not need to be there. It is likely that they will be hosting the rehearsal dinner,
which follows and would prefer to be at that location attending last minute details.

So make the rehearsal a fun event for yourself and the bridal party. Assure everyone arrives on time. Plan for a short rehearsal less then an hour. Which gives everyone lots of time to run threw the ceremony a few times. Most importantly plan something fun afterwards, most couples have a rehearsal dinner or BBQ. An opportunity to thank your wedding party and give out your attendant gifts. Just remember your rehearsal shouldn't be an event to stress over, at this time all the details should be planned. So sit back and enjoy!!D

I totally let my Alice side take over planning this party. I just let all my emotions from reading and watching the film take over. As well as doing a bit of research. Lately I've been into when brides wear a short wedding dress. It's fun, and not at all traditional. Maybe that's why I love them so much. Also when choosing a short gown you can show off your sexy heels. I know when I got married I never even had the option to go short. Now looking back I would love to change my dress up and have a bit more fun with it.

I know when you were a little girl dreaming about your wedding you probably imagined yourself wearing a beautiful full length gown with the long train. These days short wedding dresses are "HOT". Now some brides want to show off their super model legs or break the traditional wedding traditions. As long as you don't go too short and look trashy. You don't want to to pull a Pamela Anderson. It will still look like a classic and elegant.

We know about the understand the interest in footwear for weddings. During the Middle Ages a bride's father would give one of her shoes to the groom who would then tap it lightly over the bride's head to symbolize the shift in authority.

I have many brides come to me for Wedding Invitations. One because they can't find what they like or when they do it's way out of their budget. We sit down with every bride to discuss what their dream invitation is and budget. Once we have that we create a few samples for them to choose from.

Cindy and Rich didn't want a fancy invite for their destination wedding in Dominican Republic...instead something fun and fresh. They loved how they turned out.

Seeing it was a destination wedding we needed to add a little more info for everyone. So we made the card so it had two folds...invite on one then flip and then the destination card on the back. Kind of two cards in one.

If you have no idea what type of invitation you would like try to determine they type of wedding you are having. Will it be lavish and formal or more laid back and casual. Whatever your style may be it should set the scene for your wedding, letting your guests know what to expect. The formality is set by your invite and more guests determine what to wear by your invite.

Take most of your money in travelers checks rather then cash for security reasons. Or if you prefer, follow more and more couples who are choosing to use bank or cash card. If they know that access to the card will be available at their destination.
Take national credit cards for things like hotels and car rentals.
Make a list of all your travelers cheques. credit cards and checking account information. Take the information with you, but keep it separate.
Make a list of luggage contents. It will be helpful in case of lost luggage claims.
Make a list of names, addresses and phone numbers of family in case of emergency. You should also label names and phone numbers on your cell phone with the heading ICE ( in case of emergency). First responders tell us most victims at accident sites have cell phones but no indication on the phone list whom to call in an emergency. It would promptly notify the proper persons.
If wedding gifts are going to be transported to your new home or apartment while you are gone, make sure that your home owners or rental insurance will cover these additions to your belongings.
Pack light or bring another small suit case, you always come home with more then you left with. With gifts and souvenirs.

You have looked at the portfolios of a variety of photographers. You have asked friends for references. You know who is "HOT" and who is not. You know the look that you want for your wedding album. You finally pick the photographer. To insure that what you want happens as you want it, take the steps to increase the likelihood of a positive outcome by developing your own or reading closely, the prepared contract your photographer proposes.

A contract is a legal agreement between you (who promises to pay for the work) and the person who will do the work. It will make life much easier if you spell out in that contract, certain terms and conditions that should help to insure delivery of a timely and beautiful product.

Here are a few ideas for inclusion in such a contract.

Include contract information for both parties.

Specify the dates, times, and addresses of all wedding locations.

Provide the name and the contact information for an available backup photographer.

Include a clear statement of the package details the photographer offers or which you have selected.

There should be a statement of the photographer's copy right policy. Read it carefully. Generally this means that the photographer owns the exclusive legal rights to the photographs and means that you cannot use them for publication without the photographers permission. However, you can use images for personal reasons, such as posting on your wedding web site or emailing them to family and friends.

The contract should also detail:

The date that the proofs will be available and how long you may keep them.

How long your photographer will keep the negatives.

When and how you will receive your album, prints, Cd's.

The reorder prices.

The total cost and the payment due dates.

The deposit amount.

The cancellation and refund policy.

I know this must seem like alot to go over, but your wedding photographers and the one thing you will cherish for years to come. With that you want to make sure you receive everything you wanted from your photographer that day...you can't really have a re-shoot for one of the biggest days of your lives.

Also, make a list of photographs you would like taken, funny poses, special guests. Send your photographer a few pictures you have seen and really liked. It will give them a better idea of what you are looking for. It is such a busy day and you are caught up in the moment. So if your photographer has your must have list you are sure not to miss those special shots.

The Church of the Kettles, Muskoka

Church of the Kettles is a familiar site to many cottagers. It was built in 1900 on land donated by Rev. C.O. Johnston. Accessible only by water, this summer-only church is located on Lake Muskoka, directly across from Mortimer’s Point. The architecture is quintessentially Muskoka. Made totally from wood, it blends into its setting in a very symbiotic fashion. Legend has it that the rocks nearby were the hiding place for Huron sacramental vessels hidden at the time of the Iroquois invasion.

I believe destination weddings are here to stay...who wouldn't want to travel to a beautiful location for the biggest day of your lives.

Having a "Green Wedding"
Weddings are becoming more eco-friendly and green weddings are a huge trend for 2008.Couples are trying to be more environmentally conscious about everyting from recylable invitations down to menu and wedding favors.

Yellow
Yellow is 2008's hottest color for spring and summer bridesmaids. They are fresh and make any summer wedding one to remember. Just remember these are not your dated pastel yellow, instead a more vibrant brighter yellow. If you are worried that it won't go with an indoor theme no worries, just pair it up with another more richer colour. Such as chocolate brown...which gives you more of an exotic feel.
Mini Moons
Many couples are taking mini moons after their wedding and going on their honeymoon at a later time. Due to saving extra money, or if they are getting married in the summer and want to wait until it gets colder to fly down south.I think it's a great idea!!) Just a couple of days away somewhere local.Where you can relax and enjoy your new married status. There are many local getaway spots to choose from. There are so many ideas to keep those little ones happy. At the reception, create an area where the kids can play, have a mini snack bar for them to snack on, mini child-size seating with fun activities for them to do. Such as activity books, crayons, books and games. You even can get them all in your wedding theme.
If you are still not too sure if you can keep them happy.You can hire a wedding childcare professional to attend and do activities with the children, while the parents have a great time to celebrate your wedding.
Ohh and don't forget to give special favors for your little guests to take home!

Todays bride's going GREEN? Yes it is true...from the trend of destination weddings to totally green weddings.It's the newest trend and it's getting everyone's attention.This doesn't mean you have to walk down the aisle in a lime green wedding dress, but for that enviromently conscious couple this might be the route to go.From wedding dresses made of hemp, hybrid limos, organic food, natural materials and recyclable invitations. I can see why it's getting the attention of so many brides. Going "GREEN" is one of the biggest business opportunities right now so why shouldn't the wedding industry jump in as well. I'm all in for protecting the enviroment for ourselves and our children and I truly hope this trend sticks.I know I would love to plan a green wedding or at least incorporate a few elements.
